The Sea fortress, the Baltic, the Capital

On Sunday the family took me to see Helsinki. I have fallen for this city, hard. I can not get over how old everything actually is here. I was explain how old Oberlin is and Salla (host sister) made a comment about how that is old for the states. Its true. This island fortress, suomenlinna, was from the medieval ages. It seems like a place for Games of Thrones.

When we first arrived there was a market outside of the train station(one of the most majestic, harry potter places ever)

Here I tried

  • Horse (when in rome... I only had a bite)
  • these fried minnow looking things
  • garlic leaf things (made me gag)
  • cheese... tons and tons
  • sausage from Belgium and eastern Europe
  • ginger beer (soda, no D breaking ;)
  • strawberry ice cream
  • sauces
and much much more...

Then we walked across Helsinki and I was able to see the city.
Cafes are everywhere (the girls at home would love it)

You always heard music

Then came the ferry to take to the island. They travel in 20 min. increments.

The smells and the sounds are something from a book. Not to mention the sight

The colors!

We arrived to the island and went exploring the catacombs. Then we went and had a picnic on the large rocks which surround the island. The sail boats and the seagulls were a sight to be seen. The water was so blue. After a good meal of bread and sausages from the market earlier we went for a swim in the salt water!! The difference between Lake Erie was wayyy greater that I would have ever guessed. It was so refreshing.

I found an art gallery in one of the buildings

Me, enjoying the view. I have never been more relaxed

When we arrived back in Helsinki, they took me to see Senate square.

view from above the stairs from hell

The experience here has been more than perfect.
